5-Day Inca Trail: A hike to take things easy and enjoy!
Staying in camps that few people use allows you to enjoy the beautiful mountain views and watch the sunrises and sunsets in peace and quiet. Hiking the Inca Trail is one of those things everyone should do at least once in their life, and the 5-day version lets you experience it to the fullest.
The 5-day option is highly recommended for groups of families or groups of friends who want to spend more time close to each other, avoiding the crowds and the pace of the classic 4-day Inca Trail.
The 5-day hike is also recommended for seniors (60+) who want to take their time and enjoy the trail at a steady pace.
By booking your Inca Trail with Llama Path, you’re choosing the best deal for you and your porters!

5-Day Classic Inca Trail to Machu Picchu
A Slower Pace • Smaller Crowds • Two Visits to Machu Picchu
Our exclusive 5-Day Classic Inca Trail is designed for travelers who want to experience the legendary Inca Trail at a more relaxed pace while enjoying one incredible advantage that most trekking programs do not offer: you will see Machu Picchu twice.
Unlike the traditional 4-day itinerary, our carefully designed route divides the longest hiking days into shorter, more enjoyable sections. This allows you to spend more time exploring archaeological sites, appreciate the spectacular Andean scenery, and hike without rushing.
On Day 4, you will arrive at Machu Picchu through the Sun Gate (Inti Punku) during the afternoon, when most visitors have already left the sanctuary. You'll have the opportunity to enjoy the famous panoramic view and take the classic postcard photograph before continuing to our campsite at Puente Ruinas, located just 30 minutes from Aguas Calientes.
The following morning, you'll return to Machu Picchu for a complete guided tour, allowing you to experience this Wonder of the World from a completely different perspective.
Day 1
Cusco – Km 82 – Llactapata (Patallacta)
- Distance: approximately 6–7 km (3.7–4.3 miles)
- Hiking Time: 3–4 hours
- Starting Elevation: approximately 2,720 m (8,924 ft)
- Campsite Elevation: approximately 2,650–2,750 m (8,694–9,022 ft)
- Elevation Gain: moderate
Your adventure begins with an early morning drive from Cusco through the Sacred Valley to Km 82, the official starting point of the legendary Inca Trail.
Today's hike is intentionally relaxed, giving your body time to adapt while allowing you to fully appreciate the spectacular scenery. Following the Urubamba River, you'll enjoy magnificent views of the snow-capped Veronica Mountain (5,893 m / 19,334 ft) while walking through fertile valleys filled with native flowers, hummingbirds, orchids, and Andean wildlife.
Along the way, we'll visit the small Inca fortress of Vilca Raccay, before arriving at the impressive archaeological complex of Llactapata (Patallacta), one of the largest agricultural settlements built by the Incas along the trail.
Unlike most trekking companies, we camp directly at Llactapata, a peaceful campsite rarely used by other groups. Camping here not only provides a quieter experience but also makes tomorrow's ascent much easier.
Meals Included:
• Lunch • Afternoon Tea • Dinner
Accommodation:
Tents at Llactapata campsite
Day 2
Llactapata – Paucarcancha – Llulluchapampa
- Distance: 11 km (6.8 miles)
- Hiking Time: 5–6 hours
- Starting Elevation: 2,650 m (8,694 ft)
- Campsite Elevation: 3,800 m (12,467 ft)
- Elevation Gain: +1,150 m (3,773 ft)
Today we continue gradually ascending through several ecological zones, from lush cloud forest into the high Andean puna grasslands.
Rather than tackling the famous Dead Woman's Pass today like most trekking groups, we intentionally stop at Llulluchapampa, breaking the hardest climb into two manageable days.
Along the route we'll visit the fascinating Inca site of Paucarcancha, one of the least visited archaeological sites on the entire Inca Trail.
As you gain altitude, spectacular mountain scenery unfolds around you, and with a bit of luck you may even spot white-tailed deer and numerous native bird species.
Tonight we camp at Llulluchapampa, one of the quietest campsites on the trail, located just below Dead Woman's Pass.
Meals Included:
Breakfast • Lunch • Afternoon Tea • Dinner
Accommodation:
Tents at Llulluchapampa campsite
Day 3
Llulluchapampa – Dead Woman's Pass – Runkurakay Pass – Phuyupatamarca
- Distance: 16 km (10 miles)
- Hiking Time: 8–9 hours
- Starting Elevation: 3,800 m (12,467 ft)
- Highest Elevation: Dead Woman's Pass – 4,215 m (13,828 ft)
- Second Pass: Runkurakay Pass – 3,950 m (12,959 ft)
- Campsite Elevation: 3,680 m (12,073 ft)
- Elevation Gain: +415 m (1,361 ft)
Today is undoubtedly the most rewarding day of the trek.
Within the first hour you'll conquer Dead Woman's Pass, the highest point of the Classic Inca Trail. Because we camped so close to the summit, today's ascent is much shorter and significantly easier than on the traditional itinerary.
After descending into the Pacaymayu Valley, we'll explore the fascinating archaeological site of Runkurakay before climbing over the second mountain pass.
Continuing through cloud forests filled with orchids, mosses and exotic birds, we'll visit the beautifully preserved Inca city of Sayacmarca before arriving at our spectacular campsite overlooking the Andes at Phuyupatamarca, known as the "City Above the Clouds."
From camp, weather permitting, you'll enjoy unforgettable sunset views and your first distant views of Machu Picchu Mountain.
Meals Included:
Breakfast • Lunch • Afternoon Tea • Dinner
Accommodation:
Tents at Phuyupatamarca campsite
Day 4
Phuyupatamarca – Wiñay Wayna – Sun Gate – Machu Picchu – Puente Ruinas
- Distance: 10 km (6.2 miles)
- Hiking Time: 5–6 hours
- Starting Elevation: 3,680 m (12,073 ft)
- Sun Gate Elevation: 2,720 m (8,924 ft)
- Campsite Elevation: 2,050 m (6,726 ft)
- Elevation Loss: -1,630 m (-5,347 ft)
Today is one of the absolute highlights of the entire journey.
With a shorter hiking distance, you'll have plenty of time to fully explore the magnificent Inca sites of Phuyupatamarca, Intipata, and Wiñay Wayna, learning about their fascinating history and engineering with your guide.
By late afternoon, you'll arrive at the legendary Sun Gate (Inti Punku).
Your First Visit to Machu Picchu
This is where our itinerary becomes truly unique.
Most trekkers arrive early in the morning when thousands of visitors are entering the sanctuary. Instead, you'll arrive later in the day, when the crowds have largely disappeared.
From the Sun Gate you'll enjoy your first breathtaking panoramic view of Machu Picchu, walk down into the citadel, and have plenty of time to capture the iconic postcard photograph from the classic viewpoint.
Please note: On this day, we do not visit the interior of Machu Picchu. After enjoying the panoramic views and photographs, we continue walking down to our final campsite at Puente Ruinas.
Our Puente Ruinas campsite is located only 30 minutes on foot from the town of Aguas Calientes, making it the perfect location for an early visit to Machu Picchu the following morning.
Camping here allows you to fully experience the Inca Trail from beginning to end.
Optional Hotel Upgrade
If everyone in your private group prefers additional comfort, you may choose to spend the night in a hotel in Aguas Calientes instead of camping.
Additional Cost:
- Double or Matrimonial Room: USD 110 per room
Meals Included:
Breakfast • Lunch • Afternoon Tea • Dinner
Accommodation:
Camping at Puente Ruinas (or optional hotel in Aguas Calientes)
Day 5: Machu Picchu!
Machu Picchu Guided Tour (Circuit 3) – Return to Cusco
- Guided Tour: Approximately 2 hours
- Highest Elevation: 2,430 m (7,972 ft)
Wake up early and enjoy breakfast before taking one of the first shuttle buses back to Machu Picchu for your second visit to this incredible UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Your Second Visit to Machu Picchu
Unlike the previous afternoon, when you admired the citadel from the classic panoramic viewpoint after entering through the Sun Gate (Inti Punku), today you'll explore the archaeological sanctuary itself with your professional guide.
Your guided visit follows Machu Picchu Circuit 3, one of the official routes authorized by Peru's Ministry of Culture. This circuit allows you to discover many of the most important sectors of the ancient Inca city, including its impressive agricultural terraces, ceremonial areas, temples, fountains, and residential quarters, while learning about the remarkable history, architecture, and engineering of the Inca civilization.
Your guide will spend approximately 2 hours bringing Machu Picchu's fascinating history to life before giving you free time to continue exploring at your own pace.
For travelers who have secured permits in advance, this is also the opportunity to hike Huayna Picchu Mountain or Machu Picchu Mountain, depending on the permit selected during the reservation process.
In the afternoon, you'll board your train to Ollantaytambo, where our private transportation will be waiting to transfer you comfortably back to Cusco.
By the end of this unforgettable adventure, you'll have enjoyed the rare privilege of experiencing Machu Picchu twice—first by arriving on foot through the legendary Sun Gate to capture the iconic panoramic view, and then by returning the following morning to explore the sanctuary in depth on Circuit 3, creating one of the most complete Inca Trail experiences available.
