Hike to Humantay Lake (4,200 m / 13,780 ft)
With breakfast completed, it's time to begin one of the most rewarding hikes in the Cusco region.
The trail to Humantay Lake takes approximately 1.5 to 2 hours, following a well-maintained mountain path with a steady uphill climb. Although the hike is relatively short, the altitude makes it a rewarding challenge, and your guide will set a comfortable pace with several opportunities to rest, take photographs, and enjoy the spectacular scenery.
As you ascend, you'll be surrounded by breathtaking views of the Andes, colorful alpine vegetation, grazing llamas and alpacas, and the towering glaciers of Humantay Mountain and Salkantay Mountain, one of the highest and most sacred peaks in Peru.
Eventually, you'll reach the magnificent Humantay Lake, famous for its brilliant turquoise waters created by mineral-rich glacial melt. The dramatic contrast between the crystal-clear lake, the surrounding snow-covered mountains, and the deep blue Andean sky creates one of the most breathtaking landscapes in all of Peru.
Here, your guide will explain the cultural and spiritual significance of the lake, which has been considered sacred by the local Andean people for centuries.
You'll then have plenty of free time to:
- Walk around the lake.
- Capture unforgettable photographs.
- Relax and admire the scenery.
- Learn about the surrounding glaciers.
- Participate in a traditional Andean offering to the mountains (optional).
Return Hike to Soraypampa
After enjoying the incredible scenery, we begin our descent back to Soraypampa.

- Comfortable Hiking Boots or Trail Shoes : Wear sturdy hiking footwear with good traction. The trail can be rocky, uneven, and occasionally muddy depending on the season.
- Waterproof Jacket or Rain Poncho : Mountain weather is unpredictable. Even during the dry season, occasional rain showers are possible, so waterproof protection is highly recommended.
- Warm Clothing: Temperatures can be quite cold during the early morning and at higher elevations. We recommend dressing in layers, including a fleece or insulated jacket that can easily be removed as the day warms up.
- Comfortable Hiking Pants: Lightweight hiking pants provide comfort and freedom of movement while protecting your legs from the sun and changing temperatures.
- Sun Hat or Cap: The sun at over 4,000 meters (13,000 feet) is extremely strong. A hat or cap helps protect your face and keeps you comfortable during the hike.
- Sunglasses: High-quality sunglasses with UV protection are essential to shield your eyes from the intense mountain sunlight and glare reflected by the surrounding glaciers.
- Sunscreen: Apply sunscreen with a high SPF before starting the hike and reapply throughout the day to protect your skin from the powerful Andean sun.
- Personal Medications: If you take prescription medications or have any medical conditions, be sure to bring everything you may need during the day. We also recommend carrying medication for altitude sickness if advised by your doctor.
- Camera or Smartphone: Humantay Lake offers some of the most spectacular scenery in Peru. Don't forget your camera or smartphone to capture the unforgettable landscapes.
- Cash (Peruvian Soles): Carry a small amount of cash for optional expenses such as horse rental, trekking pole rental, tips, or personal purchases.
- Snacks (Optional): Although Llama Path provides snacks during the tour, you are welcome to bring your favorite energy bars, chocolate, nuts, or other personal snacks if desired.
- Portable Power Bank: Cold temperatures can drain phone and camera batteries more quickly than usual. A portable charger is a great way to ensure your devices remain powered throughout the day.
